This early 19th century Bizen sculpture is of a dog sitting on a patch of grass. The slow firing in the kiln has produced a rich, reddish brown color with ash creating splashes of a green glaze to the top of the head and parts of the body. This charming late 19th century pair of tanuki is intended to appear as Ebisu and Diakoku, the ubiquitous members of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. The one dressed as Ebisu is wearing a Japanese court cap and holding a drum, alluding to the fact that the tanuki is said to distend his stomach and use it as a drum. The one dressed as Daikoku is attired in his usual floppy cap of an imaginary Chinese merchant. Very good condition. Dimensions: 5” x 2 ½”

This finely detailed pottery figure is shaped as Okame, the goddess of mirth and prosperity. Okame is often portrayed with a wide variety of objects. Here, she is holding a large mushroom. There are a host of possible areas in Japan from which this piece might have originated . It has many layers of patina and dates to the 19th century. This 19th century boxwood netsuke has been carved in the shape of Daikoku, one of the seven gods of fortune. He is depicted leaning against a rice bale with his money sack and magic mallet slightly concealed. This carving has plenty of charm and stylization with layers of patina associated with age. The signature on the bottom reads Gazan. It is in very good condition. Dimensions: 1 Ό” x 1” x 1”

This priest was crafted in a dry lacquer on cloth technique which dates back to the Heian period (794-1185) when many sculptures were made in this way. The use of varied tones of green indicates this to be a later piece, late 19th century. There is some loss to the top of the head and the edges of the robe. An illegible signature can be found on the base. Height: 4"

This netsuke is in the shape of a kappa. This mythical river imp has the body of a tortoise, the limbs of a frog and the head of a monkey. It is sitting on a lotus leaf and grasping an eel. Dating from the early to mid-20th century, it has a very nice patina. Signed: Ryoshu. Diameter: 1 ½"
