The complex twill-plaited pattern used in this ikebana basket displays the artistic skill of the basket maker. Individual bamboo-root stalks make up the corners and feet, with layers of flat bamboo reinforced with rattan knots, forming the handle. By polishing the surface of the bamboo, the artist created a warm two-tone quality. Early to mid-1900’s. Very good condition with one knot missing on one of the stalks.

This early to mid-1900’s sculptural ikebana basket takes the form of a Japanese lantern. The hexagonal base is supported by bamboo-root stalks with bamboo root incorporated into the rim and handle. Intricately woven rattan knots and stitches provide strength, attach elements and serve as an important decorative accent. Illegible signature on the bottom. Minor damage to a few strips on the underside. (See photos)

This ikebana basket takes the form of a stylized boat, a popular shape for flower containers. This artist, from Tokyo, has enhanced the simplicity of the piece by randomly polishing strips of tightly twill-plaited lacquered bamboo to reveal a honey-colored undercoat. Bamboo strips have been twisted and attached on the diagonal to form the handle. The artist is 77 years old and resides in Tokyo. Signed: Buseki Suigetsu. Excellent Condition.

Respected for his technical mastery, Iwao Kounsai, a Kyushu artist was credited for presenting work to the Showa Emperor (1912-1926). Utilizing traditional and complex plaiting techniques, the artist designed this gracefully tapered conical-formed ikebana basket. The round openings have been shaped to complement the round bottom. A single strip of bamboo has been inserted at the base and continues over the top and down the other side to provide additional strength. Rattan bands have been used to reinforce the rim and bottom. Very good condition.
