Respected for his technical mastery, Iwao Kounsai, a Kyushu artist was credited for presenting work to the Showa Emperor (1912-1926). Utilizing traditional and complex plaiting techniques, the artist designed this gracefully tapered conical-formed ikebana basket. The round openings have been shaped to complement the round bottom. A single strip of bamboo has been inserted at the base and continues over the top and down the other side to provide additional strength. Rattan bands have been used to reinforce the rim and bottom.
