This mid-1900s lacquer piece represents the well known lacquering technique from Kamakura, where after the piece has been deeply carved with a wave and koi motif, black lacquer serves as an undercoat for top coats of vermilion lacquer. Wonderful patina with signs of wear and surface scratches on the back.
