This early to mid-1900’s toad is made from nachiguro slate which is mined in Wakayama, an area with an established reputation for its high quality slate. This early to mid-1900’s unusual double gourd is artistically decorated with camellia leaves in relief of colored lacquer. The design is enhanced by the presence of a red lacquered dragon fly. A deep teal silk cord and tassel is wrapped around the middle with a wooden stopper and mother of pearl toggle. Very good condition with a lovely patina. Dimensions: 8” x 4”

These Ittobori dolls have been exquisitely hand carved and painted from a single piece of wood. The deeply devoted couple Jo and Uba, depicted here as noh performers, are raking and collecting pine needles. As she sweeps away all sorrow and ill fortune, Jo takes care to rake in the blessings of the past. Wonderful attention to detail can be seen in the masks, rake, broom and kimono. Each is signed on the bottom. Very good condition with minor soiling on robes. They come in the original signed box. Dimensions: 9” x 4” x 3”

Auspicious figures were often used as shapes for saving boxes in Japan. Good-luck images, such as Daruma, Daikoku (god of wealth) and Ebisu (god of commerce) were common. This mid-1900’s heavy clay bank is shaped as Daruma with facial features of Daikoku. There is an old repair across the back. Dimensions: 5 ½” x 3” (across the bottom)
