Wide strips of bamboo inserted diagonally into a hexagonal-plaited support structure contribute to the dynamic composition of this double gourd shaped ikebana basket. Narrow strips have been randomly woven between the slats. Thin strips of bamboo have been twisted, braided and then wrapped around the middle to imitate a cord. It rests on a rootwood base. Early to mid-1900's. Very good condition.

Narrow strips of bamboo have been randomly woven to form the shape of this signed boat shaped ikebana basket. A series of delicate bamboo roots have been artistically incorporated into the body. The rim is composed of layers of thin strips of bamboo. Accents of root and cordage complete the piece. It has a copper liner. Good condition with wonderful attention to detail.

This early to mid-1900’s sculptural ikebana basket takes the form of a Japanese lantern. The hexagonal base is supported by bamboo-root stalks with bamboo root incorporated into the rim and handle. Intricately woven rattan knots and stitches provide strength, attach elements and serve as an important decorative accent. Illegible signature on the bottom. Minor damage to a few strips on the underside. (See photos)
