This late 1800’s jizai-kagi or kettle-hook hanger was once used for suspending a kettle over an open fire. It is crafted of beautifully grained keyaki (zelkova). This type of hook is named after the household god, Ebisu (deity of commerce). This shape reminded the Japanese of Ebisu’s court cap. It has a wonderful patina and is in good condition except for some age cracks.
