In Japanese art, naturalistic renderings of gourds were popular in the Edo Period, at which time interest in the observation of plants and animals thrived. This early 1900’s textured bronze vase is cast in the shape of a gourd with trailing leaves in high relief. The handle is twisted in the form of a worm. Very good condition with minor surface marks.

This charming late 19th century pair of tanuki is intended to appear as Ebisu and Diakoku, the ubiquitous members of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune. The one dressed as Ebisu is wearing a Japanese court cap and holding a drum, alluding to the fact that the tanuki is said to distend his stomach and use it as a drum. The one dressed as Daikoku is attired in his usual floppy cap of an imaginary Chinese merchant. Very good condition. Dimensions: 5” x 2 ½”
