This late 1800’s negoro lacquer kogo or incense container is an example of the lacquer technique where a coat of vermilion lacquer is applied over black lacquer, and is then allowed to wear away naturally, exposing patches of the black undercoat. This piece is deeply carved with a concentric circle design on the cover and sides. Excellent condition except for minor signs of wear.

This exquisitely crafted container is an example of tsuishu, a Chinese lacquering technique. A shi shi, or mythological lion and stylized peonies have been deeply carved out of vermillion-layered lacquer. The inside contains a red ink paste used for signatures. The rich coloration and patina reflects its age which dates to the mid-19th century. It is in good condition except for normal signs of wear due to age. Dimensions: 2 ½” x 2 ½” x 1”
