This early 1900's finely hand painted paper fan is decorated with chidori in flight over waves, a favored Japanese theme of art. Overcoming high waves and strong winds to migrate, the chidori is seen as an emblem of perseverance and the conquering of obstacles. The sticks and guards are finely grained zitan wood. This 19th century Sado Island granite folk art sculpture of Jizo Bosatsu, a widely worshipped deity of popular Buddhism in Japan, formerly stood in a small roadside shrine as a guardian to deceased children. This late 19th century Tsutsumi shoulder drum was traditionally used in Noh and Kabuki dramas. It consists of a lacquer main body with two heads made of horse leather stretched on iron hoops. This unusual mid to late 19th century figure is from the Oribe kilns. The hat, scepter and pose suggest this to be a high ranking civil figure in authority, perhaps a daimyo. The kimono is decorated with a three petal cherry blossom crest. Excellent condition except for a minor undetectable chip on the tip of the right shoe. Height: 7 ¼”
