This 19th century pair of shishi or mythical lions that traditionally stand guard outside the gates of Japanese Shinto shrines has been exquisitely formed of Oribe pottery as seen in the characteristic green copper oxide glaze. The fine attention to detail reflects the skill and artistry of the craftsman. Excellent condition with a wonderful patina. Height: 5”

This early 1900’s kataguchi or spouted bowl is a product of the Bizen kilns. The iron in the clay has produced an intensity of color in shades of rust, brown and green with a splashing of natural ash glaze around the spout. The potter has marked this piece with an incised signature on the bottom. Excellent condition with normal firing irregularities. Dimensions: 3” x 5 ½” x 6”

This style of Seto-ware was a standard utilitarian product of various kilns at Seto in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The tightly drawn swift circles date this piece to mid-Edo. The surface marks are the result of small tsuchi dango, or clay pellets, used to separate the stacked plates when being fired. It is slightly irregular in shape. Good condition except for old inner and outer rim chips and normal firing irregularities. Diameter: 13”

Attired in a shishi festival mask, he is depicted here standing on a rice bale holding his magic mallet in one hand and a fan in the other. Wonderful attention to detail including the rice bale accented on both ends with a flaming pearl. A deeply incised artist’s signature is on the back. Height: 10 ½”

This set of early to mid-1900’s Shino footed bowls is decorated with a stylized bat motif in underglaze iron. A thickly applied feldspar glaze allows the red of the body to show through in many places, particularly on the rim. They are stamped on the bottom by the artist Tosen. Perfect condition with signed box. Height: 2” Diameter: 4 ½”
