This style of Seto-ware was a standard utilitarian product of various kilns at Seto in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The tightly drawn swift circles date this piece to mid-Edo. This early 1900’s Japanese bowl is a product of the Kasama kilns. It is decorated with grass and birds on a cream ground with a deep teal glaze dripping over the lip onto the inside with the same glaze repeated on the exterior. The surface marks on the inside are the result of small tsuchi dango, or clay pellets, used to separate the bowl when being fired. Very good condition with normal firing irregularities. Height: 4 ¼” Diameter: 10”

This thick natural ash glazed pottery toban or food serving platter was used for the Matcha Tea Ceremony. It has a wonderful irregular shape with remnants from the firing present along the edges.
