In this early to mid-1900’s ikebana basket, extremely thin strips of bamboo have been woven in a random pattern, in multiple layers, to produce the effect of a bird’s nest. Partially disguised bamboo-root stalks function as feet. The handle and opening have been formed to suggest the moon. Good condition with minor splits on the feet.

This traditional moon-formed ikebana basket’s strong presence is a result of the use of narrow, layered strips of bamboo that have been loosely woven in a wave-like pattern throughout the body. The oval-shaped opening is designed to mirror that of the bottom. Crosspieces of bamboo root add a dimensional contrast. Early to mid-1900’s. Minor damage to the rim around the bottom.

Multiple layers of thin, narrow bamboo strips have been folded into complicated patterns to form the body as well as the supporting structure of this early to mid-1900’s ikebana basket. Complementing the undulating movement of the body is a handle formed from gnarled rootwood in the shape of a twisted human form with outstretched arms. Excellent condition.

Wide strips of bamboo inserted diagonally into a hexagonal-plaited support structure contribute to the dynamic composition of this early to mid-1900’s ikebana basket. Narrow strips have been randomly woven between the slats and then extended and manipulated to form the rim. The rope-like handle was created by wrapping and overlapping thin strips of bamboo. Very good condition.
