Respected for his technical mastery, Iwao Kounsai, a Kyushu artist was credited for presenting work to the Showa Emperor (1912-1926). Utilizing traditional and complex plaiting techniques, the artist designed this gracefully tapered conical-formed ikebana basket. The round openings have been shaped to complement the round bottom. A single strip of bamboo has been inserted at the base and continues over the top and down the other side to provide additional strength. Rattan bands have been used to reinforce the rim and bottom. Very good condition. Dimensions: 17 ½” x 6”

These bronze altar candlestands take their theme and some design aspects from China, but the overall shape and bronze filigree work indicates a 19th century Japanese origin. The eyes on the bases derive from ancient Chinese archaic bronzes where such stylized features were common. The low relief design is a lightning pattern , a version of the Greek key fret design, popular in China for centuries and often used by Japanese artisans in their own designs. They are in very good condition, except for height variation in the candle stems. Dimensions: 18” x 5”
