The body of this ikebana basket has been woven in a basic twill plaiting and overlaid with vertical strips of richly colored nemagaridake bamboo. A single piece of round bamboo has been brilliantly shaped to serve as the handle and extend down both sides to become an integral part of the vertical design.

This ikebana basket takes the form of a stylized boat, a popular shape for flower containers. This artist, from Tokyo, has enhanced the simplicity of the piece by randomly polishing strips of tightly twill-plaited lacquered bamboo to reveal a honey-colored undercoat. Bamboo strips have been twisted and attached on the diagonal to form the handle. The artist is 77 years old and resides in Tokyo. Signed: Buseki Suigetsu. Excellent Condition.

Respected for his technical mastery, Iwao Kounsai, a Kyushu artist was credited for presenting work to the Showa Emperor (1912-1926). Utilizing traditional and complex plaiting techniques, the artist designed this gracefully tapered conical-formed ikebana basket. The round openings have been shaped to complement the round bottom. A single strip of bamboo has been inserted at the base and continues over the top and down the other side to provide additional strength. Rattan bands have been used to reinforce the rim and bottom. Very good condition.

This early to mid-1900’s ikebana basket is distinctly Japanese with its rich nemagaridake bamboo, organic form and irregular weave. Reflecting sensitivity to nature and design, this artist integrated rootwood into the body and vine around the rim. An asymmetrical rootwood handle adds an unexpected contrast and tension to what may have otherwise been a static, ordinary basket. Excellent condition.

These bronze altar candlestands take their theme and some design aspects from China, but the overall shape and bronze filigree work indicates a 19th century Japanese origin. The eyes on the bases derive from ancient Chinese archaic bronzes where such stylized features were common. The low relief design is a lightning pattern , a version of the Greek key fret design, popular in China for centuries and often used by Japanese artisans in their own designs. They are in very good condition, except for height variation in the candle stems.
